Kaii had combined several piano/keyboard method books and her life long music learning books to create this sequential music theory study for this website. This page is about the understanding of the chord called "Secondary Dominant." By clicking on the other colored links at the bottom of this page, the other music theory topics can be found easily.

First, all Secondary Dominants are Dominant or Dominant Seventh Chords. And, most of the Secondary Dominant and Dominant Seventh Chords will have accidentals, because they come with a different key signature. Lastly, all Secondary Dominant and Dominant Seventh Chords make music sound fancier and better, especially in the 19th-century music.

The most frequently used Secondary Dominant Chords are placed in front of dominant chords of any key. See the following samples:

F Major Secondary Dominant & F Minor Secondary Dominant Seventh Chords of their different Dominant Chords

The Secondary Dominant (Seventh) Chords can be used in front of other chords/degrees as well, such as Supertonic, Mediant, Subdominant, Submediant, and Leading Tone. See the following samples of different Secondary Dominant Chords placed in front of different chords/degrees.
