Kaii Lee had combined several piano/keyboard method books and her life long music learning books to create this sequential music theory study for this website. This page is about the different types of Cadences: Authentic, Half, Plagal, and Deceptive. Each of these types of Cadences will be explained with a graphic music score. By clicking on the other colored links at the bottom of this page, the other music theory topics can be found easily.
A cadence is the part of harmonic structure in any music when the music phrase or sentence comes to an end. The four commonly used cadences are Authentic, Half, Plagal, and Deceptive. An Authentic Cadence is usually made with a V-I, Dominant to Tonic, chord progression at the end of a phrase. While the Dominant Chord or Dominant Seventh Chord maybe in Root Position or any forms of Inversions, the Tonic Chord is always in the the Root Position.
