Click this link to view Ms. Lee's NEH "Dvorak in America 2010" Project, with the guidelines by the National Endowment for the Humanities, in conjunction with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, and under the direction of the world renowned American Music Scholar, Joseph Horowitz.

As the lectures had come to an end, each of the Dvorak Institute participants would prepare for a presentation on their own findings and a future lesson plan. This project could be a stand-alone unit in any area of the curriculum, or it could be a part of an on-going study. Ms. Lee's presentation will be posted on this website by the end of this week.

She is currently working on several pieces of piano works by Dvorak, to be presented in the Dvorak Institute this week. The piano works include "Legends", Op, 59, No.4 and No.7, four hands (with the Institute Director, Joseph Horowitz), "The American Suite", Op.98, movements 3 and 5 (Joseph will perform the 4th movement), and "The Humoresque", Op. 101, No.1.

7/25/10

It was a busy workweek at Pittsburgh for Ms. Lee. More scholars came to present their findings and ideas on the relationship between Antonin Dvorak and American music. The Dvorak Institute visited the Stephen Foster Memorial and saw the 19th century original American sheet music! Two movie nights were devoted to discussions of the minstrels and racial tension and remarks. The American history came alive in the Pittsburgh University Music building!

After the intense studies, Ms. Lee went kayaking on the Alleghany River in the rain and searched for all the water fountains in the downtown Pittsburgh area. Click here for more trip photos.

7/18/10 During a two-day trip to Philadelphia, Ms. Lee visited the Gattysburg Battle Field, the National Cemetery, the Indian Echo Cavern, the Liberty Bell, the Independence Hall, the Benjamin Franklin Museum, the Benjamin Franklin Bridge, other historical sites, and of course, the Hershey Chocolate World. Click here for some trip photos.
7/16/10 Ms. Lee continued her study of Dvorak's music at Pittsburgh University. Dr. Robert Winter, UCLA's music professor who was Ms. Lee's professor back in her UCLA days, was the presenter for two days. The new findings on Dvorak's "New World Symphony" was surprisingly interesting. Pianist Steve Mayer performed many American piano works in a recital including works by Louis Gottschalk, Scott Joplin, Jelly Roll Morton, Fats Waller, Art Tatum, and Dvorak.
